The volcano Paliokastro

The small lava dome at the southern end of the Almyra beach was an ideal place in prehistoric times, offering protection to its inhabitants. Over time it became the acropolis of ancient Methanas, which even the ancient writer Pausanias is said to have visited.
It is a fairly small lava dome that could have been active about 100,000 to 300,000 years ago (?). Since it certainly served as a quarry, there is not much left of its original size and extent.
