Methana has been an ideal place for agriculture for thousands of years thanks to its excellent climate and fertile, volcanic soils. The farmers of Methana were often able to harvest before their competitors and also had a high quality of their products. The fields expanded on the elongated plateau between the Rethi volcano and the Chelona volcanic massif. Wheat and vegetables were grown on them. There was wine growing on the mountain slopes. Ruins of farmhouses, wine presses and storage rooms can still be found everywhere on the edges of the plateau. The use certainly goes back to prehistoric times. Even today you can find ceramic sherds from classic times around 300-600 BC.
